Tom Hanks Sued For Car Accident His Son Allegedly Caused

In California last year, Chester Hanks – or Chet Hanks as most people call him – allegedly rear-ended a man, Mr. Moogan. Now a lawsuit is being filed against Chet’s father, the famous Hollywood actor Tom Hanks. But why does the lawsuit target the celebrity who wasn’t even there at the time of the collision?

Mr. Moogan contends that Chet was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he slammed into him. Due to the fact that Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson who is also named as a defendant in the lawsuit, knew their son had a history of substance abuse, Mr. Moogan claims they should not have let him drive their vehicle. In the argument brought up in the case, this would account as negligence and thus accountability.

Pinpointing liability and moments of negligence in any car accident case can be difficult but it is not a part of the process that can be overlooked or skimped. How far can accountability extend in such a case? How much evidence would be needed to prove it? Attorneys on both sides of this claim certainly have their work cut out for them.

There is also an underlying suspicion that the plaintiff has targeted Tom Hanks and not Chet Hanks under the assumption that more money could be recovered from the actor. Does this suspicion have any weight on the case? If it is proven to be his motivation, would his claim be invalid? All of these questions and more will require the case to develop, and possibly go to court, before they are definitively answered.
