Social Media Attorney Responds to Verdicts Against Meta and YouTube in Landmark Trial
Robert King Law Firm Comments on a Plaintiff Being Awarded $6 Million for Mental Health Conditions Linked to Childhood Social Media Use
ROCHESTER, NY, March 26, 2026: Yesterday, a jury in California federal court has awarded $6 million to a young woman claiming that her childhood use of YouTube and Meta’s social media apps led her to develop mental health conditions.
The verdict returned yesterday was broken into two parts. The woman was awarded $3 million for the actual harms and losses she experienced (compensatory damages). The jury also decided that Meta’s and Google’s actions warranted punitive damages. Punitive damages are meant to punish willful or wanton conduct from a defendant. Now that the jury has decided on punitive damages, Meta must now pay $4.2 million, and YouTube must pay $1.8 million
Robert King, founder of the Robert King Law Firm, which represents children, parents, and young adults in social media addiction cases, acknowledged the possible far-reaching impacts of this verdict.
“This verdict sets the stage for a new era in corporate accountability. For the first time, a jury has decided that Meta’s and YouTube’s social media apps are products, and those products are defective,” King said. “The outcome of this trial will help inform thousands of other cases that allege harm from social media addiction.”
Wednesday’s verdict was awarded in the first bellwether trial in the social media MDL (MDL No. 3047 – IN RE: Social Media Adolescent Addiction/Personal Injury Products Liability Litigation). Currently, there are about 5,000 cases pending in state and federal courts, with more than 2,400 of those filed as part of the federal MDL.
These cases have been filed by parents, young adults, school districts, and state attorneys general. At the core of these lawsuits is the idea that social media companies have designed and marketed products that harm children. However, the first bellwether case could have broader implications in product liability lawsuits in the digital age.
Robert King noted that the precedent from this trial could also be used in other cases alleging harm caused by digital products. “As more of our lives happen online, the law will be forced to catch up. This trial and verdict show that juries are willing to hold even the largest companies accountable for the harms they inflict, especially harms to children.”
This verdict came after another similar verdict against Meta over its social media apps Facebook and Instagram. In a civil lawsuit (i.e., State of New Mexico v. Meta Platforms, Inc.) filed in New Mexico, a jury ordered Meta to pay $375 million to the state. This lawsuit was filed by New Mexico’s attorney general and the state’s Department of Justice. In that trial, prosecutors argued that Meta knowingly harmed and exploited kids, ignored internal warnings about the dangers of its social media apps, did not properly warn parents, and put profits ahead of child safety.
“These two verdicts show that juries recognize the possible dangers of social media and its impact on youth. Hopefully, these and future verdicts put pressure on social media giants to enact safeguards and take child safety seriously. These verdicts aren’t just meaningful to plaintiffs; they can also lead to real reforms that help families.”
Robert King Law Firm will continue to represent plaintiffs who allege mental health harm associated with addiction to social media apps like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok.
