Attorney Explains Why Roblox Is Being Sued for Allegedly Failing to Protect Children

Roblox Corporation has been in the news after multiple parties have sued the company for failing to protect the children who use its platform. In a relatively new wave of litigation, Roblox is facing allegations that it has not done enough to prevent adult predators from exploiting children on the video game.

Many people have questions about why Roblox would be responsible for the actions of people who use its platforms. If an adult commits sexual abuse against a child whom they met on Roblox, why would the video game developer be held responsible?

Robert King, founder of the Robert King Law Firm, which represents children, parents, and young adults in Roblox sex abuse cases, explains why a company like Roblox might be held legally liable for acts committed by someone using the platform.

“The first thing to understand is that Roblox sex abuse lawsuits are a type of civil lawsuit called a personal injury lawsuit. These lawsuits are entirely separate from any criminal proceedings against someone who commits abuse,” says King. “A civil lawsuit is meant to compensate a victim for injuries caused by another party. A criminal lawsuit is meant to punish an offender and protect society at large.”

Roblox sexual abuse lawsuits are filed by a victim who was sexually exploited on the platform. Roblox might be responsible for that abuse if the plaintiffs in these lawsuits can prove that Roblox’s actions or inactions contributed to the plaintiffs’ harm.

Plaintiffs in Roblox sexual abuse lawsuits allege that Roblox has made a product that allows adult predators to find, groom, and exploit children. There are multiple reasons Roblox could be held liable for abuse committed on its platform.

“Roblox has also marketed itself as a safe and fun platform for kids. If it is found that Roblox knew its product was being used to abuse children and did not do enough to stop abuse and prevent future abuse, they could be liable for what happened to some kids,” said King. “Similarly, if Roblox knew about safety issues and did not properly warn parents and children about the possibility of abuse on Roblox, that could be a liability for the company.”

Lawsuits filed by survivors and parents essentially accuse Roblox of negligence, unsafe platform design, and failure to uphold its child-safety obligations. If lawyers can find enough evidence to persuade juries that these allegations are true, Roblox may have to pay victims who met perpetrators while playing Roblox. If juries decide Roblox created, facilitated, or failed to address foreseeable risks to children, they could be held legally liable in civil lawsuits.

In December of 2025, a multidistrict litigation (MDL) was created for survivors of child exploitation of Roblox and their families. The federal centralized litigation is called MDL 3166 IN RE: Roblox Corporation Child Sexual Exploitation and Assault Litigation. This MDL is proceeding in California federal court. When an MDL is formed, it typically indicates that multiple people have filed lawsuits alleging similar harms from a common source. These plaintiffs will file similar lawsuits, so the courts may choose to do some parts of the litigation as a group.

“At the core of these lawsuits is the allegation that Roblox failed to protect children and created an environment where kids could easily be groomed and abused by bad actors. These are serious allegations that have serious implications for children, teens, and families,” said King. “Roblox enhanced parental controls shortly after the MDL was created, meaning these cases can drive change. Children and families deserve a safer product.”
