We are not accepting new nitrous oxide cases at this time.

Whippets are whipped cream chargers containing nitrous oxide. When they are used as a recreational drug, Whippets have various side effects on the body. Young adults and teenagers are misusing whippets as a way to get high; however, they are experiencing severe complications, like nerve damage, paralysis, psychosis, blood clots, and seizures. Many whippet manufacturers are not being straightforward about the dangerous side effects of nitrous oxide, even though these manufacturers know people use their products to get high.

This article explores the short- and long-term side effects of misusing whippets. On this page, you will also find information about injuries and deaths related to nitrous oxide use, along with warnings issued by the FDA and CDC. We also provide a list of commonly asked questions about whippet misuse and how to file a legal claim if you experience injuries related to inhaling whippets.

About Whippet Side Effects:

What Are the Side Effects of Whippets?

Whippets, which contain nitrous oxide, carry the risk of multiple side effects. Unlike medically prescribed nitrous oxide, inhaling whippets can have a range of serious and negative side effects.

Inhaling whippets recreationally causes a range of side effects, such as:

  • Temporary euphoria
  • Pain relief
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Paralysis
  • Nerve damage
  • Blood clots
  • Frostbite and cold burns
  • Psychosis
  • Lung damage
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Asphyxiation (not getting enough air)

These side effects of inhaling nitrous oxide can come on suddenly and last for minutes or months. People who use whippets multiple times a day or week may be at a higher risk of serious complications; however, people who use a high dose of NOS just once have also become severely injured from it. The following sections will dive deeper into the short- and long-term side effects of using whippets recreationally.

A list of side effects from whippets and their relative location on the body.

What Are the Short-Term Side Effects of Whippets?

Whippets, which are also known as Whip-its!, NOS, or nangs, are popular because of the intense high they deliver within seconds of someone inhaling them. However, not all of the short-term effects of nitrous oxide are pleasant, and many effects (like dizziness and hallucinations) are signs your body is sending because it is in distress.

Neurological and Mental Health Impact

The nitrous oxide in whippets can make someone feel a brief but intense high, which affects how they think, feel, and act. Some of the short-term neurological effects of nitrous oxide on the brain include euphoria, giddiness, lightheadedness, hallucination, tunnel vision, confusion, difficulty talking, passing out, and not being able to control one’s body. One of the reasons for these effects is that nitrous oxide cuts off the oxygen to your brain, so your brain is not getting the fuel it needs to work correctly.

Breathing Problems and Hypoxia

Nitrous oxide interferes with your brain and body’s ability to get enough oxygen. Because of this, using whippets can also cause breathing problems and hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain). For example, people who use whippets have suffered from a collapsed lung, frostbitten airways, seizures, and fainting. If the oxygen loss is severe, the person may suffocate. People who use high concentrations of nitrous oxide, huff it in a closed space, or have asthma are more at risk of breathing problems.

Heart Stress and Sudden Death Concerns

Whippets can make your heart beat dangerously fast or slow, which can trigger underlying heart conditions or cause an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). Nitrous oxide may also raise or lower someone’s blood pressure to unsafe levels, which can cause fainting or Sudden Sniffing Death Syndrome. Some young, healthy people have also had a heart attack from using whippets.

Injuries and Accidents While Impaired

Your risk of an accident is much higher after you huff whippets, because nitrous oxide prevents you from thinking straight or being fully conscious. For instance, people have fainted after inhaling whippets while driving, resulting in fatal car crashes. People can also fall and hit their heads when they pass out, which may result in a concussion, or they can choke on their own vomit when they lose consciousness.

Dangers of Direct Inhalation From Canisters

The side effects from inhaling the whippet directly from the canister include frostbite or cold burns on your lips, hands, face, tongue, gums, or throat. You can also get frostbite on your thighs, arms, stomach, or any bare skin that touches the freezing whippet gas or canister. The sudden change in temperature and pressure can also strain and damage the delicate tissue of your lungs.

What Are the Long-Term Side Effects of Whippets?

Unfortunately, using whippets for fun can cause serious, long-term side effects. It can damage your nerves, spinal cord, heart, lungs, or organs. Whippets are also associated with fertility issues and harm to an unborn baby. A number of people who misused whippets have also experienced psychosis, memory loss, and schizophrenia-like symptoms.

Nerve Damage and Vitamin B12 Deficiency

The nitrous oxide in whippets prevents your body from absorbing and using vitamin B12. Your nerves and spinal cord need vitamin B12 to repair themselves and send signals to each other. Using whippets can cause you to lose sensation in or the ability to move parts of your body. You may also become unable to control your bladder or bowels. These injuries may get better with time, but they may be long-term or even permanent.

Memory Loss and Cognitive Decline

Memory loss, concentration problems, and trouble thinking clearly may also be long-term struggles for people who misuse whippets. This can happen for two reasons. One, when you use nitrous oxide recreationally, it cuts off the air supply to your brain. So, your brain cells may be damaged or die from not getting oxygen. Two, brain cell death or damage may occur because your body has too much homocysteine in its system and cannot use vitamin B12. Some people who use whippets may never fully recover from the damage caused by vitamin B12 deficiency.

Psychiatric Risks (Depression, Paranoia, Hallucinations)

Long-term or heavy doses of nitrous oxide can disrupt your mental and psychological health. For example, you may experience depression, paranoia, breaks with reality (psychosis), hallucinations, personality changes, and anxiety. You may also struggle to tell the difference between real life and imaginary thoughts, which may become a long-term issue. Sometimes, misusing a psychedelic drug like nitrous oxide can lead to schizophrenia-like symptoms and lead people to harm themselves or others.

Chronic Lung Damage and Breathing Disorders

Nitrous oxide can make one of your lungs collapse. One reason for this is the sudden change in air pressure between your lungs and the gas being released from the canister. A collapsed lung can become scarred, cause you to develop emphysema, or turn into another long-term breathing issue. People who have COPD, asthma, or a related underlying health condition may be at a higher risk of severe or long-lasting lung injuries; however, it can also happen to people who do not have a history of breathing problems.

Cardiovascular Strain and Blood Clot Formation

Nitrous oxide interferes with your body’s ability to use vitamin B12, which can raise your homocysteine levels. High homocysteine levels increase your chance of a blood clot (thrombosis), regardless of your medical history. These blood clots may appear in your lungs, brain, or elsewhere, which can lead to a stroke. The lack of blood flow makes your body work harder to move blood to important places, which strains organs like your heart.

Organ Damage, Fertility Issues, and Weakened Immunity

Vitamin B12 and oxygen are vital for your body to function correctly. Whippets lower blood oxygen and keep your body from processing Vitamin B12. As such, your organs may have to work harder to do their jobs. For example, your body may not be able to make bone marrow, and your kidneys and liver may not have the oxygen needed to filter waste out of your system. Nitrous oxide exposure is also associated with miscarriages and birth defects.

Why Whippets Pose Unique Product Risks

One of the reasons Whippets are incredibly dangerous is because of how easy they are to access. Some states do not prevent minors or people under 21 years old from buying them.

Additionally, the immediate, short high they bring gives some people the impression that whippets are a safe way to unwind. Social media trends (such as on TikTok) reinforce this idea by showing people doing funny, quirky things after huffing nitrous. However, the truth is whippets can cause severe, long-term, and even permanent injuries or death. Many of the bizarre, humorous behaviors shown in the trending videos do not show the internal damage happening to their bodies.

People may also think whip-its are safe because it is the same “laughing gas” used at the dentist’s office. However, the nitrous oxide canisters you buy at the store are designed to push whipped cream out of a can, not to be inhaled by humans directly. Your dentist uses a low concentration of nitrous oxide for a short period of time, which is always mixed with oxygen and given to patients in an open space under careful supervision. In contrast, when people use whippets on their own, they are not giving themselves oxygen at the same time, and they are not being monitored by medical providers.

Documented Injuries and Deaths From Whippets?

Whippets have caused dozens of deaths and injuries globally. People who are young and do not have any medical problems have died or become permanently disabled from huffing nitrous oxide. Other people who used Whippets caused crashes that killed unsuspecting pedestrians or bicyclists.

While whippet companies use whimsical packaging and names for their products, these products are ruining many people’s lives. The companies are not being honest about the true dangers these products pose.

Woman Experiences Psychosis, Paranoid Delusions After Huffing Whippets

A 37-year-old woman huffed a large amount of nitrous oxide at a house party. Within weeks, she experienced severe psychotic symptoms. She thought she was being watched, so she started showering with her clothes on. She also saw and heard things that were not real, including a voice instructing her to tear off her fingernails.

The woman also started falling and tripping more than usual, could not remember her children’s birthdays, and felt numbness, tingling, and weakness in her limbs. She went to the emergency room and was treated for psychosis and vitamin B12 deficiency, which helped improve her symptoms. However, she needed a cane to walk when she was discharged from the hospital.

Driver Kills Three of His Friends in Crash Caused by Nitrous Oxide

Thomas Johnson was just 19 years old when he inhaled whippets and passed out while driving three of his friends around. Tragically, he lost control of the vehicle while he was unconscious, and all three of his friends died. Thomas survived, but he cannot see out of one of his eyes, and he experienced a head injury and lung damage.

Young Couple Struggles to Walk After Using Whippets

There are multiple cases where nitrous oxide caused paralysis. In one example, a young couple in their early thirties lost the ability to walk normally after they misused whippets for many years. They started using the small whippet chargers, but they moved on to large tanks of nitrous oxide so they could use it more frequently. The couple started experiencing tingling, numbness, and tightness in their hands and feet, but thought it was temporary and not anything to be worried about. Then, they both lost the ability to walk. After intensive treatments and physical therapy, they can use their legs again, but they need walkers to get around.

FDA and Medical Warnings About Whippet Usage

The FDA, CDC, and other medical organizations have issued warnings to encourage people to stop misusing whippets. These organizations cite rising deaths, neurological injuries, poisonings, and other complications. The goal is to raise awareness and counter the misleading information the public is receiving about whippets and other nitrous oxide products.

FDA’s 2025 Warning on Nitrous Oxide Misuse

In June 2025, the FDA published an updated warning, telling people not to misuse nitrous oxide. The FDA said it received reports of side effects like:

  • Blood clots
  • Neurological damage
  • Paralysis
  • Problems walking
  • Paranoid delusions
  • Death

The FDA also said users were experiencing spinal cord and brain damage, particularly if they used nitrous oxide long-term or in high doses.

CDC Data and ER Case Reports on Whippet Abuse

In recent years, more people have gone to emergency rooms or called poison control centers because of whippet misuse than in the past. In a study on this issue, the CDC noted that neurological harm, a dangerously high heart rate, and numbness were common complaints for nitrous oxide-based visits or calls.

Michigan authorities reported a 533% increase in nitrous oxide-related calls to poison control centers between 2019 and 2023. Emergency room visits related to nitrous oxide complications increased by 747% during that same period in Michigan. Similar trends are suspected in other states, too.

State Laws Restricting Whippet Sales in 2025

States are beginning to pass or consider laws to curb whippet sales in 2025. State and local governments hope that making nitrous oxide illegal will make it harder to get, which may lower deaths and injuries. For example, Oregon passed a bill that requires people to show an ID and prove they are 18 before buying whippets. Texas passed a similar law, only allowing people who are 21 or older to buy N2O. Louisiana went even further and has banned retail sales of nitrous oxide.

King Law Is Investigating Whippet Side Effect Claims

King Law is investigating whippet claims involving injuries or deaths. The companies that made and sold whippets may have lied about the safety and effects of the whipped cream chargers. As a result, many people misused whippets because they believed they were a safe, lighthearted, convenient way to have fun. People who were hurt or whose loved ones were killed after using nitrous oxide may be entitled to compensation for the full scope of their losses. Our lawyers and legal partners are supporting whippet lawsuits and the people who file them.
