Talcum powder lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson have been filed nationwide.

Does Shower to Shower Cause Ovarian Cancer?

Pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson manufactures Shower to Shower body powder. The product, which used to be talc-based, has come under scrutiny. Several studies suggest that consistent use of Shower to Shower on the perineum may substantially increase a woman’s risk of developing cancer.

For example, one study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine found that applying Shower to Shower (and other talc powders) to the perineal area at least two times per week may increase a woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer by 31 to 65%.

A sister study, by scientists with the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, also found that genital talc use may correspond with an increased risk of ovarian cancer. These studies highlight the potential dangers associated with prior use of Shower to Shower.

Is There a Shower to Shower Class Action Lawsuit?

While there is not a Shower to Shower class action lawsuit, there is a group lawsuit called a multidistrict litigation (MDL). The lawsuit, MDL-2738 IN RE: Johnson & Johnson Talcum Powder Products Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, has nearly 60,000 actions pending out of the District of New Jersey. About the Shower to Shower Powder Lawsuit:

About the Shower To Shower Lawsuit

Thousands of people have filed lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson, the maker of Shower to Shower, alleging the talc in the adult hygiene powder causes cancer. Additionally, studies show that Shower to Shower may have been contaminated with asbestos. Asbestos is a known human carcinogen, meaning scientific research indicates it can cause cancer.

It is alleged that Johnson & Johnson knew about the dangers of using talc as the main ingredient in Shower to Shower and failed to warn consumers. As early as 1972, lab tests confirmed the presence of asbestos in talc-based products. Despite knowing Shower to Shower contained potentially cancer-causing ingredients, Johnson & Johnson continued to market it as safe.

Thousands of women who used Shower to Shower have subsequently developed certain types of cancer, including ovarian cancer. It is believed that frequent use of perineal talcum powder can increase a person’s risk of developing ovarian cancer by 30% or more. These women have filed lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson in an effort to secure compensation for their losses, including coverage for their medical bills and pain and suffering.

Claims in the Shower to Shower Lawsuit

Plaintiffs allege using Johnson & Johnson’s Shower to Shower in the genital area and other parts of the body led to the development of their ovarian cancer. Johnson & Johnson is further accused of knowing that Shower to Shower sometimes contained asbestos, a known human carcinogen, and failed to warn consumers. Research shows that the company continued to promote the safety of Shower to Shower, until talc was removed from the powder in 2023.

What is Shower to Shower Powder?

Shower to Shower Powder is a personal hygiene product made by Johnson & Johnson. Prior to 2023, the product’s main active ingredient was talcum powder. Other ingredients in the product include cornstarch and baking soda.

It was marketed to men and women as a hygiene product to be used after showering. The powder was reportedly designed to help neutralize body odor and was often applied to the genital area, including the perineum. A 1975 Shower to Shower advertisement for the product includes the slogan, “A sprinkle a day helps keep odor away,” indicating its intended daily use. It was aggressively marketed on several mediums, including on television and radio.

Why Did People Use Johnson and Johnson Shower to Shower Powder?

Shower-to-shower powder was marketed as a hygiene product for use after showering. Men and women often apply the product after showering to help remove moisture and neutralize body odor. While the powder was designed to be applied all over the body, many adults applied it directly to their groins and armpits, potentially increasing a person’s risk of developing hormone-based cancers, such as ovarian cancer. In addition to being marketed to women and men for use after showering, Shower to Shower was also marketed to athletes.

When Did Shower to Shower Come Out?

Shower to Shower was initially launched in the 1960s, quickly gaining popularity after heavy marketing. Early ads, including one from 1967, show it was marketed in the 1960s for use directly on the body after showering.

What Happened to Shower to Shower Powder?

Shower to Shower is still available for purchase. However, the product no longer contains talcum powder. Johnson & Johnson announced that it would discontinue the use of talc in its products by 2023, replacing that active ingredient with a cornstarch foundation.

Ingredients in Shower to Shower without talcum powder:

  • Zea Mays (Corn) Starch
  • Sodium Bicarbonate
  • Tribasic Calcium Phosphate
  • Fragrance
  • Hydrated Silica
  • Hydrolyzed Corn Starch
  • Maltodextrin
  • Sodium Starch Octenylsuccinate
  • Water

Did Shower to Shower Contain Talc?

Before 2023 globally and 2020 in the U.S. and Canada, Shower to Shower contained talcum powder. Testing on the talc used in Johnson & Johnson products, like Shower to Shower, showed that the ingredient may contain a known human carcinogen, asbestos. After committing to discontinue using talcum powder, Johnson & Johnson began manufacturing the product with a cornstarch base.

Does Talc Cause Cancer?

On July 5, 2024, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a part of the World Health Organization, issued a press release naming talc as probably carcinogenic to humans.  The Group 2A classification came after a Working Group of 29 international experts reviewed the scientific information available. The press release further noted that several studies showed an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer for women who reported using talc-containing body powder in the perineal area.

Does Shower to Shower Still Contain Talc?

In 2020, Johnson & Johnson announced that it would stop selling talc-based products in the U.S. and Canada. In 2023, the company announced it would stop selling talcum powder products globally. As a result of the discontinuation of these products, most reputable distributors no longer offer Shower to Shower containing talc. However, Johnson & Johnson has reissued the product with a cornstarch base, which is widely available.

Did Shower to Shower Contain Asbestos?

Lab testing dating back to the 1970s indicated that the talc in certain Johnson & Johnson products contained traces of asbestos. It is believed that the contamination was most likely naturally occurring, as asbestos can be present next to the mineral talc. Numerous studies show that asbestos exposure can substantially increase a person’s risk of developing certain kinds of cancer, such as ovarian cancer.

Does Asbestos Cause Cancer?

Substantial scientific research shows that asbestos can cause cancer. Cancers linked to asbestos exposure include mesothelioma, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, and cancer of the larynx.

Does Shower to Shower Still Contain Asbestos?

As of 2023, Johnson & Johnson discontinued using talcum powder in its products. Asbestos contamination was linked to the talc in the product. With the discontinuation, it would be unlikely that Shower to Shower products would still contain any trace of asbestos.

Does Shower to Shower Cause Cancer?

Significant research shows that Shower to Shower products containing talcum powder may cause cancer. This is due to the possibility of asbestos contamination and the properties of talc, which are both minerals. As a result of the potential contamination, talc was labeled by the IARC as probably carcinogenic to humans. Cancers linked to the use of talcum powder include ovarian cancer, lung cancer, throat cancer, and mesothelioma. Studies indicate that frequent perineal use (twice or more per week) of products containing talcum powder may increase a person’s risk of developing cancer.

Shower to Shower and Ovarian Cancer

Shower to Shower body powder products were heavily marketed as odor neutralizers that should be applied to the whole body after showering. As a result of this, many men and women applied the product directly to their groin and armpits multiple times per week. One study found that the frequent perineal use of talcum powder products increased a woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer by 31 to 65%. Another study published in an Expert Review of Anticancer Therapy found that contrary to some other opinions, talc is not biologically inert and may cause molecular changes, including those that cause cancer, particularly in the ovaries. Both studies indicate that the regular, long-term use of talcum powder, particularly in the genital area, can increase a person’s risk of developing ovarian cancer.
