Swimming Pool Safety Tips – Preventing Injuries
by King Law
As summer season arrives and the weather becomes warmer, families flock to the swimming pool or the lake with friends. While spending time in the water is a great way to cool off on a hot day, it can also be quite hazardous.
According to several reports, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death for children between ages one and four. One of the most common misconceptions is that swimming pools with lifeguards are considered safe; however, it doesn’t replace adult supervision.
The following are safety tips to consider when you decide to bring your family to the swimming pool this summer:
- Never leave children alone in or near the pool, no matter what.
- Ensure that the lifeguards on duty know CPR and can rescue a child if an accident occurs.
- If you have a pool at home, surround it with a sturdy fence that is five feet tall – on all four sides
- Make sure the gates self-close and self-latch at a height that is out-of-reach to children
- Have rescue equipment, such as a shepherd’s hook and a life preserver, nearby
- If infants of toddlers are near the pool, an adult should always be within arm’s length
- Inflatable swimming aids, such as “floaties,” are not considered a substitute for an approved life vest.
- Always wash your hands with soap or water after using the restroom or changing diapers to avoid spreading germs in the water
- Do not swallow pool water
