Driving Habits that Can Cause Serious Car Accidents

Many car accidents are the result of careless behaviors that could have been avoided. If you or someone you love was injured in a collision caused by another driver’s negligent or reckless behaviors, you may have cause for legal action. Review some of the most common types of careless driving listed below, and call The Law Office of Robert King if your accident involved any of the following.

  • Texting or talking while driving, and other forms of distraction. Any behavior that takes a driver’s attention away from the road is considered to be distracted driving, and texting or talking on the phone while driving are some of the biggest culprits. According to the National Safety Council, 26% of crashes in 2012 were the result of texting or talking while driving. That’s more than a million collisions involving distractions caused by phone usage every year!
  • Tailgating or following too closely. Tailgating is a fast way to cause an accident, as drivers who follow too closely behind the cars in front of them do not leave enough room (or time) to brake should there be the need. Far too many rear-end accidents are the result of tailgating.
  • Aggressive driving and road rage. Angry drivers are a danger to everyone on the road. Typically, these are the cars you see excessively swerving in and out of lanes, honking unnecessarily, speeding, and following too closely. Alone, any one of these behaviors could be dangerous; when combined, an accident is far more likely.
  • Failure to use turn signals. A turn signal alerts other drivers on the road that you’ll be making a right or left turn or that you’ll be switching lanes. Drivers who fail to use their turn signals put other cars on the road at risk, as they are unprepared for the impending turn or lane change and may not yield accordingly.
  • Running red lights. It’s not uncommon for a driver to accelerate through an ending yellow light, or even through a light that has just turned red. While this act will certainly buy time for the driver who runs the light, it instantly puts all other cars and pedestrians on the road at risk.

After an auto accident, especially one caused by a negligent or reckless driver, it’s crucial that you quickly contact an attorney. You may be entitled to compensation for your injuries and property damage. Contact a Rochester car accident lawyer at The Law Office of Robert King for a free review of your case.
